Pepperoni and Cheese Crescent Rolls

My family has a BIG problem when it comes to carbs. We LOVE bread, pasta, and anything with unhealthy carbs. However, we only eat these meals when we have very active or busy weeks, or if we are short on time (this is STILL better than fast food).

These Pepperoni & Cheese Crescent Rolls are pretty dang good! Filled with pizza sauce, mini pepperonis, and shredded cheese, they are tasty on their own or dipped in ranch or melted garlic butter! We have eaten this on movie nights with a salad, or as a mid-afternoon snack after a day at the lake or pool. The kids (and husband) gobble this stuff up!!

Unfortunately, I do not have any recent pictures of this creation. But the recipe is very straightforward and easy!

Pepperoni and Cheese Crescent Rolls

Ingredients:

  • 1 regular size can of crescent rolls (not the “mini” ones)
  • pizza sauce or marinara
  • mini pepperonis
  • shredded mozzarella cheese
  • shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted
  • garlic powder
  • parmesan cheese
  • italian seasoning

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 deg. Line baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. On a LIGHTLY floured surface roll out crescent rolls into triangles.
  3. Spread pizza sauce or marinara across all triangles.
  4. Top with mini pepperonis, mozzarella cheese, and cheddar cheese.
  5. Roll each triangle into a crescent (start in the middle on the wide, flat side and roll toward the point of the triangle. Make sure it is rolled up tight enough not to let the toppings fall out.
  6. Place on parchment lined pan. Spread melted butter over crescent rolls, then top with garlic powder, parmesan cheese, and italian seasoning.
  7. Bake in a 375 deg oven for 11-13 min, or until golden brown. Serve with Ranch or more pizza sauce!

I actually just found a recipe for homemade crescent roll dough and it looks pretty good. I’m going to try that recipe out in a few days and then I will update this post after I try it with the homemade and compare the two. Like I said, this is a very quick, easy, simple recipe to whip up for snacks or a very quick dinner.

What a quick, simple, HOMEMADE alternative to boxed pasta!

Ingredients

2 cups of flour

3 eggs

1 teaspoon olive oil

pinch of salt

Begin this recipe by mounding the flour on a clean working surface. Next, hollow out the center of the flour creating a bowl. Break the eggs in a separate dish and whisk together. Poor the eggs into the center of the flour bowl.

WARNING if this is your first time do all of this in a bowl! If you are not careful and break the sides of the flour wall the eggs will spill out everywhere !  ( I learned the hard way ) haha.

Pizza Twist Sticks

Kids of all ages will LOVE these delicious treats that are perfect for an after school snack, party, or even for dinner! My family loves pizza. My 2 year old’s third word was “pizza,” and he ate two whole Pizza Twist Sticks so if I get his stamp of approval, everyone should love this!!! I originally found this recipe on Pinterest. Head on over to the Weary Chef if you want the original, because I added a few extra things to mine.

You *can* use pizza bread dough with this recipe. I ran out of time prior to making this, so I bought a package of frozen white bread (it came as 3 “1 lb loaves”). I preheated the oven to 175 deg and then cut it off. I waited about 3 minutes and then placed the frozen dough on a pan and placed it in the oven for a little bit. I didn’t time it but I’m estimating maybe 45 minutes…When I pulled it out, it was perfectly defrosted. Of course you can follow the directions and thaw it in the fridge for 24 hours, but our fridge tends to freeze things so it was counterproductive for us!

Preheat oven to 400 deg. Once the dough is fully defrosted, flour your working surface and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick. This was my first time working with pre-frozen bread dough and I had a hard time rolling it out. It kept shrinking back to its original shape, but I eventually got it to stay.

Spread as much pizza sauce or marinara as you want over each piece of dough. I found it stuck a little better with sauce on both pieces (the original only calls for sauce on one piece). Then layer whatever toppings you want. We used mini pepperonis, mozzarella cheese, and cheddar cheese. My family loves cheese so I used extra.

Next, take the piece of dough that does not have toppings on it and place it over the toppings. Seal the edges as good as you can.

The original posting states to cut the dough every 1 1/2 inches, but those ended up being WAY to big for our kids, so I cut the dough every 1/2-3/4 inches or so.

Carefully take each slice and twist it tightly. I made a huge mess doing this, but it was fun!!! Place it on a pan lined with parchment paper. Then lightly spray the twists with olive oil cooking spray and sprinkle garlic powder and parsley over the top. Place in the 400 deg oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Pizza Twist Sticks

Ingredients:

  • 2 – 1 lb loaves of frozen white bread
  • pizza sauce or marinara
  • mini pepperonis
  • shredded mozzarella cheese
  • shredded cheddar cheese
  • olive oil cooking spray
  • garlic powder
  • parsley flakes

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 deg. Line baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. On a floured surface, roll out defrosted loaves of bread to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  3. Spread pizza sauce or marinara across both pieces of dough.
  4. Top with mini pepperonis, mozzarella cheese, and cheddar cheese.
  5. Place the other piece of dough over the toppings and gently seal the edges. Cut the dough every 1/2-3/4 inches.
  6. Take each strip and gently twist. Place on parchment lined pan. Lightly spray twists with olive oil cooking spray, then top with garlic powder and parsley flakes.
  7. Bake in a 400 deg oven for 15-20 min, or until golden brown. Serve with Ranch or more pizza sauce!

And there you have it. A simple twist on traditional pizza. The kids loved dipping it in Ranch. We ended up serving our twists with chips, but feel free to serve it by itself or with anything your heart desires. I hope you enjoy this treat as much as we did!!

** UPDATE **

I originally wrote this on one of my other blogs and transferred it over to this one because it is just TOO good not to share this one. We have made this many times and we all still love it! We usually do these on nights we have sleepovers or when we are watching a a new movie. We usually dip the sticks in ranch dressing or extra pizza sauce. SO good!

Sloppy Joe Squares

Holy Moly! These things pretty much surprised us. I have always loved sloppy joes. No, they are not healthy for you but eating this every once in a while will NOT kill you lol And you can use leaner hamburger meat and your own homemade sloppy joe sauce, or even use turkey! BE CREATIVE!

The addition of cheese and the crunchy yet soft crust makes this meal much cleaner than using a bun, and it adds a more unique and richer flavor. This will definitely become a regular menu item in my future meal planning!

My husband ate two large plates and my son ate three small helpings. He’s TWO and he kept asking “More, mama, pweeeez!” My little dude loved it and so did my honey. My daughter ate it but wasn’t too impressed (but she’s not big on sloppy joes anyway…not sure she’s my daughter haha).

First, preheat oven to 350 deg. Spray 13×9 (3 quart) glass baking dish with cooking spray (along bottom and sides).

Next, roll out one can of crescent rolls and spread across bottom of dish. Stretch it so it completely covers the bottom and goes up a little on the ends.

Fry up 1 pound of hamburger meat. Drain it very well and wipe additional grease out of pan. Put hamburger meat back into pan and add can of sloppy joe sauce. Heat to warmed through, about 10 minutes.

Spoon sloppy joe mixture onto rolled out crescent dough. Cover the bottom completely.

Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese across the sloppy joe mixture. Add as much or as little as you want. Just make sure you remember you have another roll to place on top!

Unroll second can of crescent rolls and place on top of cheese. Make sure the ends kind of curl down the sides to close up the ends. And make sure the dough is stretched to cover the entire top. Melt butter and pour over the top, using a basting brush to spread the butter out evenly (don’t DRENCH it, just enough to spread!). Sprinkle top with Parmesan cheese and Parsley Flakes or whatever you want. The original recipe, found here, uses sesame seeds, but I loved the added taste of the parmesan and parsley.

Pop that bad mama-jama in the preheated oven at 350 deg for 30 minutes, or until golden brown. I left it in there for exactly 30 minutes and it came out a little crunchier and browner than I would have liked, BUT it was still delicious!!!

Sloppy Joe Squares

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb hamburger meat
  • 1 can sloppy joe mix
  • 2 cans crescent rolls (8 or 12 oz)
  • 1-2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 3/4 Tbsp butter, melted
  • Parmesan cheese, grated
  • parsley flakes

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 deg. Spray 13×9 inch glass baking dish with cooking spray along the bottom and sides.
  2. Cook hamburger meat over medium heat until browned. Drain well. Add meat back to pan and pour can of sloppy joe mix into meat. Stir until well blended and then heat thoroughly, about 10 minutes.
  3. Roll out one can of crescent rolls, making sure most of the seams are not fully apart (but they don’t have to be fully sealed either…cheese holds it together). Pour sloppy joe mixture over dough and spread out evenly.
  4. Sprinkle good helping of cheese over mixture. Top with second unrolled crescent roll dough. Pour melted butter over top and spread evenly.
  5. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese and parsley flakes over butter. Bake at 350 deg for 30 minutes, or until golden brown.

And there ya go! While this takes a little longer (maybe an hour total until it cools down enough for the kids) it is very simple and worth the wait. I stood in the kitchen and read while I waited on it to bake, so it’s a chill recipe. I hope you enjoyed this as much as we did!

** EDIT : UPDATE **

So I posted this recipe on one of my other blogs I had before this one. I copied the posts I really liked to transfer onto this blog in the event I have a “brain fart” day. I have made this meal 5-6 times since I originally posted it.

  • In MY oven it cooks perfectly around 24 minutes.
  • I make sure to use just regular shredded (NOT finely shredded) sharp cheddar cheese to really bring out the flavors. The crescent roll dough is much more robust in taste compared to a bun, so the cheese is a nice off-set.
  • Garlic salt is a GREAT addition to this meal. BUT, you have to be like my family and really LOVE garlic lol.
  • This makes A LOT. I think my family eats rather large portions. After we gobbled it up the first time, we STILL had half of the meal left. You can let it cool completely and then cut into individual portions. Seal in freezer bags. When you want a portion, let it thaw in the fridge overnight and then either pop it in the microwave or pop it back in the oven for 10 minutes or so.
